Bob Heft designed the first 50 star American flag. He was seventeen years old at the time and did it for a high school art project. His teacher gave him a B- on his project because it "lacked originality". Later, when Hawaii and Alaska became official states, Congress chose Heft's design for the new flag and the teacher was obliged to change the grade from a B- to an A. Read more about it at
